The art of embroidery dates back centuries and was one of the skills that most young “ladies” were taught as they grew up, usually by their mother who learned it from their mother. Today however the skill of embroidery is something that very few people ever learn to do by hand, instead many people use a computerized embroidery machine that makes the most intricate of designs imaginable. With a microprocessor built in the electronic sewing machine can take a pattern off of a memory card or via USB and recreate it down to the last detail.

Embroidery machines made the task so much easier that almost anybody could do it and led to a great commercial venture that became very popular as people found new and creative ways to personalize a wide variety of clothes and other personal items. The original embroidery machine was very large and required a skilled operator to create and apply the pattern. Today the computerized embroidery machine has made it possible to create extremely complex and intricate patterns and can be operated by most people easily.

The computerized embroidery machine differs from an electronic sewing machine by virtue of the fact that it has a microprocessor that allows it to work with new information from the card as opposed to just working with a set of preinstalled patterns.  They can also be set up to automatically create a pattern and then automatically stitch it onto the material without any need to guide the material while the pattern is being created.

The average computerized embroidery machine is loaded with features such as an automated needle threader, multiple needle positions, over one hundred different stitches, the ability to create mirror images and an LCD display that can show you the stitch type, length, width and the pattern that is currently being sewn.

With the computerized machine you can also choose to upload a picture that you would like to recreate with embroidery and the built in software can then convert it into an embroidery pattern. It can then take this new pattern and resize it automatically to sew it onto whatever item you want to have it sewn onto. Many of the more expensive machines have this type of software built in but there are several different programs available to help you create the most beautiful patterns you could ask for.

Owning a computerized embroidery machine can be a great hobby or you can use it to start your own small business from home. Embroidered items are very popular and many home based embroidery business make a decent income with them.
