I am a new at sewing, but I have had an accomplished seamstress giving me lessons. Even she has been impressed with everything this little machine can do. If I could give this machine 4 and 3/4 stars, I would. The only reason I can’t give it 5 is because of it’s “free arm”. This has got to be the fattest free arm I have ever seen. It is definitely not easy to set in sleeves with this machine. It can be done though. Overall, this little sweetheart is well worth the price.

I’ve had this sewing machine for 3 years, and it’s still running well with casual use. It will occasionally jam-up, but haven’t had a problem solving it yet. I’ve never had a major complaint about it, and still happy I chose it. I’d definitely recommend it for casual or beginner sewers.

My brother ES-2000 sewing machine lasted for exactly one project. Near the end of the project, the thread became very tangled in the bobbin case; the machine beeped at me repeatedly and indicated an E6 message. I looked up the error code and untangled the thread. The machine was unresponsive so I power cycled it. It beeped for a good long while after being turned back on and then never did anything every again. Huzzah for cheap plastic crap!

So far Brother’s “Support” department has not been very supportive. They’ve pointed me to their gee-whiz-awesome trouble shooting chart: Symptom – sewing machine does not work -> Possible Cause – You have not used the foot pedal correctly -> How to put it right – Use the foot controller properly. Thanks for that awesome advice! And here I thought I was supposed to work it with my tongue. Perhaps I can coerce Brother into replacing it under the so far under-whelming 25 year limited warranty. It appears that the warranty is limited to the original air in the box, however. Seeing as I’ve already misplaced the factory air, I’m pretty much boned on this one.

The light still comes on, but that’s about all it can do. I have half a mind to rip it apart and salvage out the motor to build a vandegraff generator. At least I can (safely) shock my students with it. Until I decide to do something else with it, it does a great job propping open the door of my shed.

If I could give it a negative rating, I’d be all over that.

The seller Mr. Vac & Mrs. Sew did deliver in two days and the packaging was very sturdy. I was very surprised to see two big boxes delivered. Once I had determined which was machine and which was goodies, I was more excited to open the additional box that came with my new Brother. I had expected the thread to be sample sized about 2 inches long and ½ inch in diameter. I was very surprised to see full size spools in 61 colors. Also were 144 bobbins all pre-wound and ready for me to start. Included was a full size of Tear away stabilizer, again I was expecting sample sizes.

The Brother has been very user friendly; I have to admit I was a little scared to use it. It is my first embroidery machine. I read through the instructions briefly and I was off. (mostly to find out how to secure the material and stabilizer in the hoop).
I feel like the guy from Ronco – you just set it and forget it. The only time you have to pay attention is when it is time to change the tread.

I also like the options set up. I can have the machine programmed to back up / lock the thread at the end of a stitch and cut the thread for me when I finish. I am using this machine for quilting and I like not having to get out my scissors when I am piecing strips or squares. I have used it for quilting finish on one project so far and it walked great on the two layers of material and low loft batting. I it also embroideries through those layers just as easy. My first project was a baby blanket and I was able to put the babies name on after I completed the project. Nice big electric blue letters for a little boy. (thread was compliments of the “Grand Slam Package”).

I had never touched a sewing machine before in my life. After reading through the manual a couple times, I was able to wind the bobbin and thread the machine pretty easily. This machine has an automatic needle-threader that worked only once. I’ve never been able to get the machine to thread the needle since then, so I just do it manually. This model makes wonderful stitches, is very quiet, and travels well. I’ve managed to sew through some really thick layers (I make cloth diapers and cloth menstrual pads) with only minor mishaps such as a few skipped stitches. I would recommend this machine to beginners who will be moving on to a more advanced machine as they get more involved in the craft of sewing.

I’ve done about 5 hours sewing on this machine and now it comes up with a F2 fault code and the machine won’t work. According to the manual I have to contact the Brother service department….
I’ve also never encounted such problems with the cotton getting tangled around the top spool nor had the needle unthread it self. I know this can be handled by pulling enough thread through but I’ve done alot of sewing over the years and never had this problem. Still I guess you get what you pay for.

My husband did some research for me (he likes that kind of thing – I can’t stand it) and found that this machine got great reviews. I’ve had it for about 6 months now and am very happy with it. I was surprised that it came with a walking foot and an attachment to extend the sewing surface. These items are usually extras that have to be purchased separately. I wanted to purchase extra bobbins but had trouble finding them in my area, but after a quick search online I found what I needed. I’ve never had an electronic machine before and I love the additional features it offers. My favorite has to be the option to have the needle always stop in the raised position (or the lowered position) depending on what you are sewing. The automatic bobbin threader is another nice feature. There are many decorative stitches to choose from as well. All in all, a great sewing machine at a good price. I would highly recommend it.

This is example Janome 8077 Computerized Sewing Machine comment from customer : I purchased this sewing machine as a gift for my grand-children. When it arrived, I checked it out to make sure it worked well and was a good machine for them. I read the manual to learn about its’ features and made all the stitches on a scrap of material. The machine is quiet, runs smoothly and makes beautiful stitches, plus it is lightweight and easy to transport.

I was so thrilled that I kept raving, to my husband, about what a great little machine it is. In fact, I liked it so much, I decided to keep it for myself and I had to order another one for my grandchildren.

This machine is way better than many machines that cost much more. I already have a Bernina (expensive) and a Singer Featherweight but I fell in love with this sewing machine. I would recommend it to anyone and, in fact, I did. I told two my friends about it and they each bought one.

This is example Brother SE400 Computerized Embroidery and Sewing Machine comment from customer : I just purchased a Brother SE-400 computarized sewing and embroidery machine from Ken’s Sewing and Vacuum Center via Amazon.com. It arrived within three days. So far, I am VERY pleased with this machine.
Loving embroidery, I decided to purchase the Brother SE-400, as it had all the features I wanted and it was within my price range. Prior to my purchase, I read all the web reviews I could find on the SE-350, as there are barely any reviews yet for the SE-400 (new on the market). Noteworthy is the fact that the SE-350 and the SE-400 are the exact same machines except for the additional computer connectivity that the SE-400 possesses. The SE-400 has a port for computer connectivity and comes with a USB cable which helps connect directly the sewing machine to your computer. This is an advantage over the SE-350 as this feature allows you to upload embroidery designs directly from the web(or your computer) to your machine, and update your machine’s operational software from Brother whenever updates occur.
The SE-400 is compact enough, comes with a handle at the top, which makes it truly portable. Even though it is relatively lightweight (compared to my good 40-year old “all metal” Kenmore), the SE-400 feels sturdy while sewing and it is a very easy machine to operate. The manuals that came with the machine are very well written and the diagrams easy to follow. It took me only a few minutes to figure out how this machine operates. I love the self threading feature of the machine, as well as the built-in thread cutter, bobbin sensors, and drop in lower bobbin.
I was also delighted to find out that the embroidery part of the machine has the following built in features: You can reflect an embroidery design; and rotate the design 1 degree, 10 degrees, or 90 degrees at a time.
I appreciated all the enclosed accessories that came with my SE-400. I wished though that it came with an additional large embroidery hoop too, besides the medium hoop. I guess I will have to buy a large hoop sooner or later, if I am to become more involved with machine embroidery.
The SE-400 is a good choice for a home sewer. I give it a 5-star.
One more note. If you are looking for a hard carrying case for this machine, I highly recommend the Brother 5300 universal hard carrying case. It is the perfect fit for it.
